Large Vintage Industrial Printer’s Letterpress Tray / Drawer
What’s the story? Originally, this printer’s tray would’ve been in a large chest with many other thin, wide drawers, each containing a different set of letterpress fonts for printing. Individual letters would have been collected and set into wooden lines of text, inked and then printed. The tray is sectioned into lots of miniature compartments, and each would’ve housed multiples of letters, numbers and punctuation. These days, letterpress printing is an artisan skill, replaced by computerised print systems. But these salvaged drawers are packed with history and character. Mounted on the wall, they make superb aged, vintage frames with tiny shelves for displaying small treasures or just as wall art in their own right. This one comes with its handle on the side still. They’re wonderful for children’s bedrooms where they might be hoarding a collection of very small things (Lego figures spring to mind!). They also look very special displaying natural things, gathered from outside – a special pebble, a dried flower, a cone, a seed head. We’ve added to discreet D rings on the back to aid hanging. It comes knocked and bruised from its industrial past but in its day, this would have been a busy ‘working’ piece and this wear is very much part of its appeal. Free UK Delivery!£50.00 -
Vintage Brass Mid-height Spotlight Floor Lamp
What’s the story? This brass and black vintage floor lamp is a real, old-fashioned delight. The spotlight can be angled up and down to get the lighting just right. It comes a little life-worn and aged but this rather adds to its appeal in our view. Working well and PAT tested it's ready to plug in and be put to good use. We love the mid-height of this particular floor lamp. It's just right for reading, set beside a favourite chair or by the bed side. Free UK Delivery!£125.00 -
Scratch-made Vintage Mahogany Tap Dance Board
What’s the story? Would you have know what this is? We fell in love with the thick slab of solid mahogany first and foremost (such a rare and special find these days) before considering what it might have been made for. It has a beautiful aged patina and a substantial weight to it, a fine piece of wood. It has a handle grip so clearly designed to be carried. And on one side there's a curious hand-carved grid along with a wooden bar and rubber bungs at strategic points. It's a scratch-made tap dance board. The lines and bar are there as guides for learning tap steps, and then the blank reverse would have been for practice without. We've no idea on date but we would hazard a guess that it's pre-sixties, possibly even dating back to the early 20th. Regardless, this is a super thing with a cracking back story. We've restored the blank side, carefully sanding it back without removing all the ageing and character and then it's been finished with food-safe oil for a durable finish. It would make a grand sharing platter for cheeses and meats. Free UK Delivery!£100.00 -
Vintage 1940s Art Deco Style Alarm Clock Bedside Lamp by Goblin
What’s the story? Goblin was responsible for giving the world (well, Great Britain mainly) the iconic Teasmade. If you're unfamiliar, it was a bedside alarm clock that incorporated automatic tea-making facilities so when you woke up there would be a fresh brew ready. It was a subsidiary of British Vacuum Cleaner & Engineering Company and the first Teasmade was launched in the mid-1930s. Goblin went on to produce various versions of the teasmade, along with alarm clocks, table lights and radios. This 1940's piece with a distinct Art Deco look about it is an alarm clock and bedside lamp in one. Working reliably well and rewired, it's a great deal of fun and a true blast from the past. The glass bulb lampshade and silver bracket has been added in later years but it doesn't jar. It's not dissimilar to the original glass shade shape so seems entirely appropriate. We love the metallic teal finish and who can resist the satisfying click of an old-fashioned switch? Free UK Delivery!£90.00 -
Midcentury 1950s San Marino Decorative Ceramic Wall Plaque by SAM
What’s the story? There is great deal to love about this European, midcentury, ceramic wall plaque. It hails from San Marino, dates from the fifties and we believe it is by produced by SAM. Illustrating a bustling Chinese street scene, it's full of life, movement and colour. And the colours are extraordinary, vivid and bright. The various characters depicted have so much character without becoming cartoonish. They're superbly drawn. The background has an unusual textured, bubbled surface, further adding to its appeal. Our favourite thing... the two angry roosters in the man's basket on his back. On the reverse, thread is cleverly looped through the pottery slab for hanging. Free UK Delivery!£100.00 -
